Porto can share expert advice on how to “Live as a Family”, according to the Norwegian consultant Sumo Finans. The company ranked factors such as affordability, education, safety, environment, family-friendly things to do, nature and park sites per square km, ‘good for kids’ attractions per square km and Global Peace Index 2020 Index, did the math and “Porto takes the top spot on our table.”

Porto is ranked first out of 50 cities in Europe; podium places are also another city in Portugal, Lisbon with the third place in the ranking, and a neighbour city, Barcelona that ranks second. All 50 cities have been assessed according to the criteria above mentioned (among other; check the full list here).

After taking all factors into consideration, Sumo Finans stated that Porto takes the lead “with plenty of family-friendly things to do, including 0.92 nature and park sites per square km, and 1.69 ‘good for kids’ attractions per square km”. Maximum score is 100 and Porto got 75.28 points, followed by Barcelona, which scores 68.60 and Lisbon with 98.12 points. London closes the rank, with the worst score (36.60).

It is worth highlighting that Portugal is mentioned as the third most peaceful country in the world, as well.

All the cities included in the rank were shortlisted because they fit in the “family friendly” label, as asserted by various sources devoted to family travels, namely the Kinder Travel Guide and the Phenomenal Globe.
