The muppie campaign by Porto City Hall to raise awareness on the importance of complying with the preventive measures regarding the fight against Covid-19 has been distinguished at the International Design Competition Graphis Awards 2021 with an honourable mention.
The muppie campaign was developed by the Studio Eduardo Aires, author of the graphic design of the "Porto." brand, and the eight muppie billboards derive their image from the Porto. icons, which are represented in a yellow backdrop. The goal was to raise awareness on the emergency situation and the importance of complying with the preventive health measures in place for a collective positive impact.
This campaign had already been spotlighted by The Guardian that displayed Porto’s Covid prevention measures campaign as a best example to explain how Europe was tackling the pandemic’s second wave. The online article highlighted how Portugal and several other European countries, such as Austria, Germany, France, and Sweden implemented measures to engage the population regarding restrictions.
The Graphis 2021 also awarded six posters by the Municipal Theatre of Porto - Rivoli, with a Silver Graphis Award, in the Poster category. This layout was also authored by Studio Eduardo Aires.
This is not a first that municipal design projects are spotlighted in the Graphis Awards. In 2019, the rebranding of Porto Municipal Theatre and the identity of the Bolhão Temporary Market, which were developed by the Studio Eduardo Aires, as well, were distinguished at the International Design Competition Graphis Awards.
In addition, the identity of the Museu da Cidade won the Silver award at the International Design Competition Graphis Awards, in 2018.
Graphis was founded in 1944 by Walter Herdeg and Dr. Walter Amstutz in Zurich, Switzerlan, and later moved the headquarters to New York City. This international publisher of books on communication design annually presents and promotes the best submitted work in Design, Advertising, Photography and Art/Illustration, which are then selected for following categories: Best Platinum, Gold, and Silver awards.
In addition, Honourable Mentions are also archived permanently on Graphis' website.
