Organic crop production in municipal veg gardens

The City Hall encourages people to start vegetable gardens in public spaces as an innovative way of using public space with nutritionally valuable vegetable plants that also contribute to local food security.

The most significant veg garden is located in Campanhã, in Horta da Oliveira, with 95 plots.

These initiatives are in line with the municipality's environmental policy of increased interest in organic crop production and the desire to sustain or improve the soil resource.

The main concept behind this approach is to boost and inspire vegetable gardens in public spaces by relying more on biological processes and organic crop production within the soil system to recycle and release nutrients.
