The mayor of Porto is visiting Japan, among other initiatives, to renew the twinning agreement with the city of Nagasaki, established in May 1978. Rui Moreira was received this morning in the Japanese parliament (National Diet Building).

The mayor met in Tokyo with Tomomi Inada, former defence minister and current deputy of parliament and member of the Japan-Portugal Parliamentary Friendship Group. The meeting, which took place in the national parliament itself, was also attended by the Portuguese ambassador, Vítor Sereno.

Rui Moreira and Tomomi Inada addressed Porto's current relations with Japan, with a special reference to architect Kengo Kuma's project, in partnership with his OODA counterparts, for the Municipal Slaughterhouse.

With a global investment of more than 40 million euros, fully guaranteed by the winning company of the public tender, Mota-Engil, the conversion of the former Industrial Slaughterhouse will result in diversified and multipurpose business spaces, commercial and leisure spaces of local support, spaces for social action and connection with the local community and of a cultural and artistic nature, for exhibitions, production and deposit of art collection.

In June of this year, the governor of Nagasaki, Oishi Kengo, accompanied by the mayor, Rui Moreira, and the city councillor, Pedro Baganha, aimed at the work underway in that block in the eastern part of the city.

Meanwhile, the Porto mayor's visit program to Japan continues, passing through the Nagasaki City Hall, where he will be received by his counterpart from the Japanese city, Suzuki Shiro.
