SWORD Health is to hire in Porto as a result of the increase in demand for digital physiotherapy to replace in-person sessions, owing to the new confinement. SWORD Health, which has been developing this solution since 2015, invested nearly 21 million euros in this platform and is to hire staff to work in its office in Porto.

The company was founded in Porto in 2015, and it is growing fast in the American market – it represents 190 million dollars – owing to the digital physiotherapy it has developed by combining clinical and artificial intelligence teams. The exponential rise in demand for digital physiotherapy across the Atlantic, throughout 2020 and in 2021, requires that teams are strengthened with more collaborators; as such, the office in Porto will hire workers in the fields of technology, product and operations.

Virgilio Bento, founder and CEO of SWORD Health, as cited by Dinheiro Vivo, affirms that “This was a breakout year for SWORD Health. We grew our client footprint and revenue dramatically and were selected in 75 percent of evaluations we participated in by employers searching for a better way to provide musculoskeletal care to their populations.”

This growth led to the company receiving a B series investment (the second phase in the startup path, targeted at expanding businesses, improving processes, betting in new markets and hiring talents). Following two capital injections of eight and seventeen million dollars in 2019 and 2020, respectively, the company rakes in investment of circa 50 million dollars (over 40 million euros).

The company has offices in Porto, Salt Lake City and New York and last year SWORD Health was included in the Technology Fast 500 by Deloitte, which shortlists the fastest growing companies in the past four years, in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

Musculoskeletal conditions are a leading cause of disability all across the globe, according to the WHO, and the repeated lockdown has direct consequences in both depression and chronic health issues. As a result of the lockdowns and confinement in almost all regions of Europe, the demand for virtual physical therapy solutions escalated and is expected to skyrocket in the immediate future.
