Manchester City and Chelsea will fight for the coveted title of the best European club, on 29 May, at 8 pm, at the Estádio do Dragão, in Porto. This was an announcement by the FC Porto and the Portuguese Football Federation.

The match was previously scheduled to take place in Istanbul, but the fact that Turkey is undergoing a complicated pandemic situation, and it is now on England’s red list of travel destinations, led UEFA to reschedule the match, and although the Wembley Stadium, in London, was on the table to host the match, the chosen stadium was the Estádio do Dragão, which will be the arena for the final of the Champions League.

This is the first time that Porto hosts the final of the major European Football competition, although it has also hosted another important meeting of the so-called king of sports, football: the final phase of the League of Nations, where Portugal was crowned champion.

In August 2020, the Dragão Stadium was scheduled to be the host of the European Super Cup, but last minute changes led UEFA to transfer the holding of the match to Lisbon, on the grounds of the pandemic.

Rui Moreira objected to this situation, at the time, but informed during the Executive Meeting, held this morning, that the Estádio do Dragão will host the final of the Champions League.

In view of this new match, at European level, to be hosted in the city, the Mayor of Porto revealed that he requested that those objections to UEFA were withdrawn. “I think it is fair”, Rui Moreira mentioned.

“This is excellent news to the city”, enthused Rui Moreira, accompanied by all the councillors.
