Porto City Hall already handed out discount coupons and vouchers to city traders joining this initiative: for each 20 euros spent in street trading, traditional trade and local trade, customers will be granted a 2-euro direct rebate. Porto City Hall prepared this incentive programme to boost the economic activity in the city, under the pandemic constraints.

There is a communication campaign all around the city to recall both residents and visitors to Porto that this initiative is in place as of 14th December. As such, mupis with dedicated messages are scattered in strategic places telling people that “É freguês, leva três” [“Takes five, pays four”, free translation] or “Venha à rua com segurança. Leve Natal, traga esperança”, [“Come to the street, safely. Bring Xmas and take hope”, free translation]. The purpose is to call on shopping hunters to hit the local shops in Porto, when buying their Xmas presents.

Porto City Hall prepared The “Programa de Incentivo à Atividade Comercial” aka “Incentive Programme to Commercial Activity” (free translation) to boost the economic activity in the city, by giving away 162.500 vouchers, an investment that amounts to 325 thousand euros. This programme will run during this holiday season, i.e. Xmas and New Year, and it is exclusively targeted at local business with doors facing the street and with a surface of up to 250 square meters.

Each merchant will be granted 100 vouchers at a time, and for each 20 euros spent in street trading, traditional trade and local trade, customers will be granted a 2-euro direct rebate.

In addition, this huge Christmas campaign also adds the parking exemption fees in the city, per 120 minutes, in the four municipal parks: Trindade, Silo Auto, Duque de Loulé and Alfândega, which is granted upon presentation of the tickets handed out by the local merchants. Tickets can be used between 8th December and 8th January, up to the limit of 10.000 units.

Shopping local also provides the perfect opportunity to see the amazing Christmas lights and decorations in downtown Porto, as there are 82 streets, squares, gardens and avenues in Porto that will cheer spirits and invite to shop local while strolling and appreciating the Christmas magic.

Lighten up, it's Christmas!
