CIMMAR, the Interdisciplinary Centre of Maritime and Environmental Investigation obtained international recognition by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The ISO 9001 certification puts CIIMAR, the research centre of the University of Porto, among the best institution in the world as regards management and organisation.

The transfer of CIMMAR’s headquarters to the new building in the Cruise Terminal of the Port of Leixões, the major seaport of Portugal, was adamant to obtaining the certification. The year CIIMAR completes its 20th anniversary, UP’s research centre is acknowledged by the ISO with the granting of the ISO 9001, which certifies process optimisation, greater flexibility as regards product development. Thus, processes implemented by CIIMAR have their quality proved and offers partners the quality and performance assurance, which is directly related with financing allocation, partnerships and collaborations, support to research and greater competitiveness, as well as reduction of costs with procedural implementations.

According to Rodrigo Ozório, member of the CIIMAR’s board and in charge of the application to the ISO 9001 certification, the recent transfer of its headquarter to the building in the Cruise Terminal of the Port of Leixões not also meant better working space and more suitable services organisation and strategy, but it also “facilitated the preparation of the application to the ISO and the resulting approval”.
