The studio SUMMARY, based in Porto and led by architect Samuel Gonçalves, alumnus of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto (FAUP), won the prestigious dezeen Awards 2020 in the category “Emerging Architect of the Year”.

Samuel Gonçalves is the winner of the “Emerging Architect of the Year” award granted under the dezeen Awards 2020. These awards are promoted by dezeen, one of the most reputed design magazines in the world and which is based in the UK.

The company graduated at UPTEC — Science and Technology Park of the University of Portoand stood out among thousands of applications from 85 countries. The finalists were shortlisted by a panel of experts that includes Paola Antonelli (curator of the MoMA, New York) or Sir Norman Foster (Pritzker Prize). Before the final selection, the awards were up for public voting and gathered over 62 thousand participants.

This is the second time that the work by the studio from Porto is acknowledged at international level. In September, the SUMMARY architect studio won the AZ Award, with a modular building constructed in Vale de Cambra. The award, attributed in Toronto, highlighted the project as the best collective dwelling for “the clarity showcased from inception to build form”, referred Omar Gandhi, one of the members of the jury of this award.

Samuel Gonçalves created the SUMMARY studio in 2015 and operates in the fields of urbanism, architecture; it featured already projects as the installation that was presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2016 and the modular prototype Gomos#1.

In 2018, the FAUP alumnus also won the international competition “Europe 40 under 40”, and it is now included in the Top 40 Emerging Architects and Designers in Europe, as his work is already making an impact in the built environment.
