Adão da Fonseca is the winner of 2018 Civil Engineering Excellence Awards

One of the most prestigious awards in the construction engineering area, the 2018 Civil Engineering Excellence Award, was given to Adão da Fonseca, former Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), in recognition for "his outstanding projects towards the common good" as well as for "his professional career as a civil engineer to the benefit of society".

The official announcement was given during the 13th General Assembly of the WCCE - World Council of Civil Engineers, which was held in Sucre, Bolivia, September last.

Adão da Fonseca is one of the most reputed Portuguese civil Engineers and has led the Infante Dom Henrique Bridge project in Porto, as well as Bridge Pedro and Inês in Coimbra and the Pavilion of Knowledge, in Lisbon".

The "Excellence Award for Civil Engineering" was established in 2010 and it is granted every two years.

The prize giving ceremony will be held during the next WCCE General Assembly, September next year, in Lisbon.

It is worth mentioning that the new bridge project between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia had already been the subject of a study by Adão da Fonseca several years ago, who had indicated that the chosen place - the low part, in the area of Oliveira do Douro, between the bridges of São João and Freixo, as the best site for building the bridge.
