"Eyes wide open! 100 years of Leica photography" is the next exhibition to be featured at the Municipal Gallery of Porto from November 30, 2016 to February 5, 2017.

This public showing, organised by the Porto City Hall and curated by Hans-Michael Koetzle, offers a close look into aspects of photography practice and theory: from technological and aesthetic evolution to ethical and deontological concerns, by means of freedom of expression in the arts.

This exhibit focus on the history and collection of the Leica company (also of its presence in Portugal), back to the 20th century to present day, allowing the viewer a glance at the vast accumulated photography captured by Leica.

The exhibition is divided into fourteen nuclei, and explains the 35mm format impact in photography in the context of art history and Western culture, the effects of photography miniaturization in the creative work of amateurs, artists and photojournalists and especially examines how visual language has changed over the decades and, with it, our perception of the world.

Some of the iconic names in photography will be included in the exhibition: Nobuyoshi Araki, Julia Baier, Oskar Barnack, René Burri, Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Gérard Castello-Lopes, François Fontaine, Bruce Gilden, Eva Kemlein, Saul Leiter, Susan Meiselas, Paulo Nozolino, Victor Palla, Alexander Rodtschenko or Christer Strömholm, among others.
