The Route Porto Liberal promotes a symbolical marking of the date of the landing of D. Pedro IV in the beach of Arnosa de Pampelido, in Matosinhos. From 8 July to 30 September expect no less than a full programme of exhibitions, visits and guided tours.

«PESSOAS, ESPAÇOS e MEMÓRIAS» [“PEOPLE, SPACES and MEMORIES”, free translation] includes several activities that recall the ideological fights between liberal constitutionalists and conservative absolutists, since the 1820 Liberal Revolution until the Civil War of 1832-34.

The cultural programme starts on the day that marks the 189th anniversary of the landing of D. Pedro IV in the beach of Arnosa de Pampelido, in Matosinhos - 8 July 1832 – and that caused the Siege of Porto. This was the time between July 1832 and August 1833 in which the troops of Dom Pedro remained besieged by the forces of Dom Miguel I of Portugal.

In addition, there are three not to miss temporary exhibitions at the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis (MNSR), at the MMIPO – Museu e Igreja da Misericórdia do Porto and at the Museu Militar do Porto, featuring museum pieces by these museum’s collections that illustrate the conflict of ideologies, in the beginning of the nineteenth century.

The programme also includes visits and guided tours to iconic places in the city that will unveil some aspects regarding liberalism in Portugal.

It is worth highlighting that the Route Porto Liberal was established in 2017, via the combined efforts of such entities as Porto City Hall, Northern Regional Directorate of Culture, Portuguese Army, Honourable Brotherhood of Our Lady of Lapa, Museum and Church of the Misericórdia of Porto and Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis, in the dissemination of the places that played a part in those times of conflict and the contribution by King D. Pedro IV, also known as Liberator of Brazil and its first Emperor, as an independent country.
