YES Meeting is "Breaking Boundaries for the 15th time", and now it debates extraordinary times

The 15th edition of the YES Meeting, organised by students of the Faculty of Medicine takes on, for the first time, a digital format and although apart it brings together 650 young researchers and renowned international scientists. 

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP) is the digital arena of the YES Meeting 15th edition, devoted to the biomedical field of research. During four days, young researchers will have the opportunity to learn from the best, including a Nobel laureate, namely Gregory Winter, Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018, best known for his work on the therapeutic use of monoclonal antibodies.

The oldest University event of its kind in Portugal had to be readjusted due to the ongoing pandemic and kicked off today, 17th September. This congress runs till 20th September, with participants from 39 countries, such as Portugal, the United States of America, Spain and the United Kingdom. These scientists and experts will deliver lectures on career, sex differences, biotechnology, molecular biology, neurosciences and surgery.

Also included in the programme are the scientific and clinical competitions, in which the circa 154 undergraduates are challenged to present research papers and have the chance to win valuable incentive prizes, worth up to seven thousand euros.

This event also features a humanitarian side to it, as part of each subscription of the 658 participants to the Meeting will be granted to the Porto Food Bank, via the YESHARE programme.

The opening session included the participation of António de Sousa Pereira, Rector of the UP, Altamiro da Costa Pereira, Director of FMUP, Miguel Guimarães, President of the Medical Association and a recorded welcome message by the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, who stressed that "in a year when we are facing a strange and unpredictable threat, it is very important that undergraduate students of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, together with their peers, internationally, discuss all that is going on and think also about the future of science".
