The play "Wild Spring" by renowned play writer Arnold Wesker premieres at National Theatre São João (TNSJ) in Porto, on 18 July at 9pm and it will be on stage till 28 July.

Staged by Jorge Pinto, who is also in charge of scenography, TNSJ brings to Porto the work of an author that changed the face of English drama. Wesker was born on 24 May 1932 in Stepney in the East End of London, of Russian-Jewish and Hungarian-Jewish ascent.

Wesker voiced political and social discontent in his plays, which can be regarded as a portrait of current society, and how that unrest undermines relationships.

"Wild Spring" (1992) is a story about Gertrude, a successful but insecure actress regarding her talent. This play acts like a metaphor for the several personae that we build for ourselves, false images that we fall in love with leading to an everyday acting or staging.

In 1961 Wesker was sentenced to a month in prison due to his leading role in the Committee of 100's demonstrations against the use of nuclear weapons. He was the artistic director of Centre 42, a cultural movement for popularising the arts.

Arnold Wesker is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, having been knighted in 2006.

This performance is a joint production by Ensemble - Sociedade de Actores and TNSJ.
