Eunice Ferreira, a student taking a doctor's degree in cellular and molecular biotechnology Saúde (BiotechHealth) at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences Abel Salazar of the University of Porto, has been granted a scholarship by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).

Her project includes the study of the cyanobacteria Synechocystis and its genetic manipulation, "so as to produce compounds with a high added value, namely compatible solutes", the researcher explains.

The EMBL Advanced Training Centre Corporate Partnership Programme Fellowship has been granted to the doctoral programme student of the University of Porto following the presentation of the "Creating is Understanding: Synthetic Biology Masters Complexity" project, which was held last September in Heidelberg, in Germany.

Eunice Ferreira is part of the Bioengineering and Synthetic Microbiology Group, led by Paula Tamagnini.

The purpose of such a project is to effectively produce the so called compatible solutes, which are of great interest to the cosmetics, biomedical and food industries, especially for their protective and stabilizing properties.
