Programme to combating child poverty and social exclusion supports 150 families in Porto

Porto City Hall signed a partnership with the Foundation "la Caixa" and BPI to launch the programme "Proinfância" ["Pro Infancy", free translation]. This programme is aimed at fighting child poverty and social exclusion, by providing support to circa 150 families in the parishes of Campanhã, Lordelo do Ouro and Ramalde.

Since its establishment in Spain, this programme "Proinfância" has supported over 300 thousand vulnerable children and youth.

The programme features several activities and measures that improve these children's chances of achieving a better future, namely educational, as speech therapy, group studies, school equipment and open classes; also, non-formal educational events as camping, summer activities and leisure activities; this programme also includes psychosocial support to children and families, and food and hygiene care.

The support of the Foundation "la Caixa" represents a value of about 300 million euros, to be implemented in the three parishes of Porto (Campanhã, Lordelo do Ouro and Ramalde), renewable for a period of one year.

The programme protocol was signed this morning, at Porto City Hall, by Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, and by the honorary president of BPI and curator of the Foundation "la Caixa", Artur Santos Silva. The support will be provided via the social institutions, which will be selected by public tender.
