Individuals and collective persons that have been fighting the new coronavirus on the frontline, in the city of Porto, will be honoured by Porto City Hall, as this year the traditional Medal Award Ceremony of the city will not be held for sanitary reasons.

This is in line with a proposal by Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, to be presented at the next Executive Meeting. For the occasion, designer Eduardo Aires designed a special piece to replace the medals.

The object symbolizes the "blood, sweat and tears" of all those who have contributed to the Coronavirus fight and to the success in breaking the COVID-19 contagion in Porto.

This honour also enshrines the remembrance of the name of Ricardo Jorge, the epidemiologist from Porto and University of Porto famous Alumni, who fought the bubonic plague in Porto, by the end of the nineteenth century.

The attribution of this award is yet to be scheduled, as it depends on the evolution of the pandemic and the proposal has to be approved by the Executive.

The Municipality of Porto was swift in its action to prevent the further spread of the new coronavirus, relying on the support of several individuals and corporates, national and foreigner, as well as an extensive screening to all nursing home workers or even the assembly of the field hospital Porto.
