Porto City Hall celebrates International Youth Day (IYD) with several activities targeted at young people. The celebration kicked off on 10 August and runs for the entire week till 18 August.

The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000. This day was designated by the United Nations to draw attention to cultural, sports and leisure issues surrounding youth.

This year the motto of IYD is "Transforming Education" and it enhances the struggle to make education more important, fair and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves.

This year the celebration of IYD is rooted in Goal 4 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, namely to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all".

This date will help understand how Governments, young people and youth-led and youth-focused organizations, and other stakeholders as well, are changing education and exactly how these efforts contribute to the achievement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The municipality of Porto offers an array of free activities, jointly organised with the Youth and Sport Portuguese Institute, ranging from yoga, Tai chi, Pilates, outdoor cinema, to concerts and exhibitions.

The purpose is to make education inclusive and accessible for all, as mentioned by Councillor for Youth and Sports at Porto City Hall, Catarina Araújo.
