Porto and Macao strengthen friendship and partnership bonds with MoU

The Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, Fernando Chui Sai On, was welcomed by the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, the President of the Municipal Assembly and the members of the Municipal Executive, in a formal sitting, whose highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding focused on enhancing the great cooperation that has been deepened in recent years.

Porto and Macau celebrate this year the 22nd anniversary of the town-twinning, and the occasion is "the perfect time to strengthening the bonds within the established cooperation framework" as stated by Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira.

As such, the MoU signed today includes the commitment between Porto and Macao "to promote successful cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, tourism, education, traditional Chinese medicine, youth entrepreneurship, and protection of cultural heritage".

Also, Rui Moreira listed the priorities for this MoU, namely the establishment of Macao Special Administrative Region as "a World Centre of Tourism and leisure" and the development of this areas in the city of Porto. 

Another goal is to help boost Macao as "a platform of services for trade cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries", thus promoting the growing role of Porto in the new world economy", noted the Mayor of Porto during the ceremony at Porto Town Hall.

This protocol also ensures the creation of the scholarship "A Band, a Route" (Uma Faixa, Uma Rota), by the Macao Foundation.

The Mayor of Porto handed over the city keys to Fernando Chui Sai On. The Chief Executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China thanked the honour and stated that "not only this is a great honour to me but also it conveys the deep friendship that the people of Porto have towards the people of Macao".

"These keys will open doors towards the strengthening of contacts between both Parties and the exchange in specific areas", concluded Fernando Chui Sai On.
