The Northern region of Portugal was the one that contributed the most to increase labour productivity, between 2000 and 2017; this represents a 20% growth compared to the Lisbon Metropolitan area, which has risen 3.3% in the same period.

Yet, the Northern region continues to show a lower per capita income. These are the findings of a study by the Commission for the Coordination of Regional Development of the North (CCDRN).

"The North, the region that shows lower per capita income, was the region that contributed the most for labour efficiency and productivity in Portugal, between 2000 and 2017. This is a single circumstance in the European Union, where the most developed regions of the different member states (border-regions), and most of those capital cities, were the great promoters of that growth", as described in the CCDRN report Norte Estrutura.

This special edition is not limited to analysing the northern region, but it assesses other national and European zones. The study demonstrates that, in a 17 year period, "Portugal showed a poor productivity growth (just 15.2%, year-on-year), in blatant contrast with other European countries, especially the one in East Europe", as stated by Lusa.

"The weakness in the productivity growth was especially noteworthy in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, where there was only 3.3% growth", as stated in the document. Comparatively, "the evolution in the northern region was much more favourable, with a year-on-year growth of 20.0%", the same document refers.

However, and according to the same document, although there has been a positive evolution at national level by the northern region, that same growth was modest at European level.

According to CCDRN, this assessment relies on the OECD data base.
