Joan Jonas ground-breaking artwork showcased at Serralves till 1st September

The Serralves Foundation features the most comprehensive exhibit ever organised to present date on the artwork by Joan Jonas in the late 1960s. The exhibit is showcased at the Serralves Foundation till 1 September 2019.

The American visual artist is considered as the pioneer of video and performance art and the most important female artist to emerge in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The acclaimed artist's artwork influences extends to conceptual art, theatre, performance art and other visual media. She lives and works in New York and Nova Scotia, Canada.

The inception of Joan Jonas artistic journey takes back to the mid-1960s. For years, she built a name and became a reference on dance, modern theatre and the way and tradition of Noh and Kabuki Japanese theatre with visual arts. Her investigations on art and culture, regarding both objectivity and subjectivity are crucial to the development of many contemporary artistic genres, from performance and video to conceptual art and theatre.

Jonas has performed for some of the most influential artists of her generation, back in the seventies and the eighties, including Richard Serra, Robert Smithson, Dan Graham and Laurie Anderson. She is widely known in Europe, but lesser known in the United States.

The "Joan Jonas" exhibition, which was inaugurated on 25 May at the Serralves Museum is jointly organised by Tate Modern and Serralves Foundation, Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, and it is curated by Marta Almeida, and Paula Fernandes.
