"An investment of fifteen million euros will enable the expansion of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport", as announced by ANA- Aeroportos de Portugal CEO Thierry Ligonnière, to meet the rapid growth that has already made Porto Airport the best in Europe in 2018, in the category of five to 15 million passengers by Airports Council International.

Porto Airport will have the capacity to receive up to 20 million passengers per year.

Expansion works have already began. The airport will be widened and new approach roads will be built, as announced by Thierry Ligonnière, "with the goal of meeting traffic demands", as quoted by Lusa.

The announcement was released on 26 April, with the presence of several stakeholders of the Northern Region of Portugal, namely the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira.

As a result, Porto Airport will be able to handle 32 aircraft movements per hour, instead of the current 20.

The expansion of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport is likely to conclude by April 2020 and will boost the airport passenger handling capacity, up till 20 million per year.

The works take place mainly at night with the aim of causing as little burden on traffic as possible.

The expansion works have included the airport's security area, which has been enlarged in March last year.
