Porto is not oblivious to the importance of 1820 and tailored a programme to celebrate the date that shaped the nation.

Thursday, 1st October marks two highlights in the Bicentennial of 1820 Liberal Revolution. The inauguration of an exhibition at the Military Museum on the prelude of the 24th August and the launch of a book that recounts the 40 days that have changed Portugal, authored by Vital Moreira and José Domingues.

Celebrations had to suspend amid the public health crisis, although the cycle "Conversas Situadas" was held during Porto Book Fair, October sets the programme on track with two new events; on 1st October, at 4pm, at the Museu Militar do Porto (Rua do Heroísmo, 329), the inauguration of the exhibition themed "Revolução de 24 de Agosto de 1820: Prelúdio do Liberalismo em Portugal", [Revolution of 24th August 1820: Prelude of Liberalism in Portugal", free translation], curated by Fernando Gonçalves.

On that same day, 1st October, at 6.30pm, Vital Moreira and José Domingues launch their book "No Bicentenário da Revolução Liberal II: Os 40 dias que mudaram Portugal (Diário da Revolução)" ["The Bicentennial of the Liberal Revolution II: the 40 days that have changed Portugal (Diary of the Revolution)", free translation].

Entrance is free, but limited to 95 seated participants in the auditorium. For more information, contact via email bib.agarrett@cm-porto.pt or phone number 226 081 000.

The exhibition "Revolução de 24 de Agosto de 1820: Prelúdio do Liberalismo em Portugal" will be on display at the Museu Militar do Porto till 1st August 2021. This exhibit depicts the bravery of a group of relevant citizens in Porto, who not only demand that the King should return to Portugal, but also the establishment of a Constitution, justice and prosperity for the nation. This event, 200 years ago, marked the beginning of the end of the British influence and the setting up of a liberal monarchy.

The Museu Militar do Porto closes on Mondays; but visits can be organised from Tuesdays to Fridays and on Sundays, between 10am and 12.30 pm, and from 2pm to 5pm. On Saturdays the Museum is open from 2pm to 5pm.
