The Environment Educational team at the Municipality of Porto continues to produce tutorials to help the community engage in healthier attitudes towards the environment. This time round it is all about helping little birds get food, as days are shorter and they do not have enough time to seek nourishment, even because there are fewer insects and seeds.

Everyone can help by building a feeder, reusing materials found at home and adjusting them to the purpose in hand; this way, biodiversity is promoted not only at home but also in the city.

The Municipal Environment Team produced a tutorial to guide you step by step in building a bird feeding station; there are simple rules to follow and the impact to the animal life all round in town can be huge.

The type of food to place in the feeder is corn bran, seeds, ice, millet, wheat or natural groundnuts. Be careful not to place large amounts of food as it can rotten; also, on drier days, place a bowl of water nearby the food.

There is also a golden rule in this process: these bird feeding stations should only be used in winter, as birds need to watch over themselves and when spring arrives, there is a lot of food available, with insects and seeds "flourishing". That is Nature following its course.
